Dave Rubin: Power Trio Blues Guitar (Hal Leonard 1996)

Do you play blues guitar or would you like to know more about the different styles ranging from the West Side of Chicago to Texas? If so, then this book is for you.

The book and the accompanying CD offer notes and sound examples from guitarists like Luther Allison, Jimi Hendrix, Freddie King, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Johnny Winter among others.

This books offers little information about the artists themselves, so it is a book for guitar fans only! The format is more of a magazine than of an ordinary book.

Sandra B. Tooze: Muddy Waters - The Mojo Man (ECW Press 1997)

Sandra B. Tooze has written an important and essential book as this is not only a Muddy Waters biography, but it is also an important contribution to the history of the blues, especially post war electric Chicago blues.

This book is regarded by many as one of the best books about the blues ever written and I do agree. It is 382 pages filled with information and a complete discography. And the Muddy Waters catalogue is huge!

Muddy Waters was not only important for the blues, but equally important for all post war electric popular music, especially rock. He was the hero and inspiration to bands like The Rolling Stones and all the great British bands of the 60s like Fleetwood Mac and The Yardbirds (even The Beatles).

Eric Clapton has written an excellent foreword to the book where he states: "His music changed my life, and whether you know it or not, and like it or not, it probably changed yours too". I know it changed mine.

Colin Larkin: The Virgin Encyclopedia Of The Blues (Virgin 1998)

This is one of the books I use the most, both as a blues reference handbook when searching for information on a particular artist and sometimes I just browse and read about artists new to me.

It is 414 pages packed with information on artists from Muddy Waters to contemporary bluesrock artists like Stevie Ray Vaughan.

Apart from offering consice artist information, it also rates the artists albums. This is always a matter of taste, but it could be of help in finding out new recordings that
you want to check out. I have used my copy so much that I am in need of a new one! This book is a must own for any blues and blues rock fan.
