Howard and the White Boys: "Live at Chord On Blues"
Chicago, Illinois is one of the truly great cities in the world for blues and blues/rock music. While there were many outstanding blues artists already on the scene, it was the arrival of Mississippi Muddy Waters in the 40's that marked the beginning of this new and exciting genre known as Chicago Blues. His use of both an electric guitar and stringed accompaniment gave birth to a raw urban sound unlike anything else heard before. In his footsteps would follow some of the greatest artists in blues and blues/rock history, including arch rival Howling Wolf, Magic Sam, Otis Rush, Buddy Guy, and others too numerous to mention.

Today, the Chicago music scene remains alive and well, thanks to the efforts of bands like Howard and the White Boys. Fronted by vocalist and bass player extraordinaire Howard McCullum, the band, which began at Northern Illinois University in 1988, has grown over time to become one of Chicago's busiest and best loved acts. "Live at the Chord On Blues" is their fourth release and finds the band in their most natural environment: in front of an enthusiastic and energetic audience.

"Live at the Chord On Blues" is a delightful musical smorgasbord with a delicious entree guaranteed to satisfy most every appetite. The material is a mixture of blues, blues/rock, funk, and soul. The band is very talented and skin tight. Howard's vocals are solid throughout and the band's original material is excellent. Best of all, this band connects well with the audience. While you listening to this recording, you may swear that you are listening to old friends playing at a private party. There is a genuineness in their sound which you will find quite refreshing.

I have several favorites on this recording, among which are the CD opener "Havin' a Good Time is a Full-Time Job", the funky "Bo Diddley" (one of my boyhood heros), and Howard's own "Bad Attitude". The other selections on this recording are good, as well, and all filled with hot guitar licks, heart wrenching blues harp, and a driving rhythm section.

The CD is available in stores or through many online retailers including Amazon.com.
